A record I didn't buy at a record fair years ago still haunts me: a copy of the rather rare 'I Rock Boots' 12-inch, a fairly obscure track from an early hip-hop stylist Jimmy Spicer, who on other tracks rapped in a Dracula voice and wrote a whole song about a fat family ('The Bubble Bunch'). It was like $25 bucks, which is a lot for a total of eight minutes of recorded sound, but it goes for way more (currently for sale on discogs.com for $99) and I'm a dope for not buying it. Then again, something I bought at that same record fair stays in rotation, a very cheap and very nice-sounding copy of Timmy Thomas' album "Why Can't We Live Together" (now best known as the sample source for Drake's 'Hotline Bling'). Point is, record fairs and bazaars, like the one that's coming through Windup Space, stick with you—it means something to sit around in a room of sweaty dudes (it is always mostly dudes) and dusty records and dig and dig. Find a good gift for a friend here to get their record collection going or to just add to it, or maybe there's some weird-ass LP that'll make a novelty present. Go and see. Among the vendors are Normal's Books & Records, El Suprimo Records, Protean Books & Records, Shock Dr. Record Shop, Own Guru, Joe's Record Paradise, Wax Atlas, Mystery Sound Recordings, Vinyl Vagabonds, and plenty more.
